CBD is short for cannabidiol. It is a natural plant compound that is found in the cannabis family plant. Not to be confused with medical cannabis, CBD sold comes from the hemp plant, that is a plant which is very high in CBD and low in THC (the infamous compound that gets you high).
We are just at the beginning of our scientific research on CBD oil. CBD has been touted to help with everything from inflammation, sleep disorders, anxiety, epilepsy to chronic pain and lots more in between.
How can this be? Well what is less known is that around 30 years ago, scientists discovered a 6th body system called an endocannabinoid system (ECS). Our ECS is responsible for keeping our bodies in balance (or homeostasis) and therefore works with everything from sleep, appetite, mood, pain, immune system etc.) CBD interacts with our ECS and helps the breakdown of neurotransmitters like anandamide too early.
Shockingly, the ECS is still not taught in medical schools although we hope this is now changing
The World Health Organisation (WHO) declared CBD as safe and well tolerated in adults. It is non-addictive, it is "not associated with abuse potential." In addition, CBD has several medical applications (such as epilepsy)
Unlike THC, CBD will never get you "high".
Absolutely yes! CBD oil extracted from hemp which is legal in the EU. Hemp based products are legal in the EU as long as they do not contain more than trace elements of THC, which is a controlled substance under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.
It really depends on your goal, the reason why you are taking CBD oil.
If the goal is simply to calm sore muscles and achy joints, then a CBD topical cream would be the most effective solution. However, help with sleep for example would be better with oil, paste or capsule.
With all that in mind, we think an oil based product is a good first step to try for most people if the goal is not to help sore muscles/joints. It is easy to take (under the tongue), it acts quickly and it has ok absorption rates (through our highly permeable salivary glands under the tongue).
The hemp as a plant is a bioaccumulator. This means it absorb any pesticides and heavy metals used in its growing.
That's why it's so important to always choose a certified organic CBD product.
If you are looking to try CBD for the first time, always look for high quality full spectrum (often called whole-plant) organic CBD product which contains not only CBD but other compounds such as minor cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids that work together synergistically.
CBD is not illegal and is not something that drug tests scan for. However, THC is illegal and there are trace elements of THC in full-spectrum CBD oil. But you will need to take huge amounts of this oil in order for the THC to be detected by a drug test.
However, If you are in anyway concerned about this, you might like to try instead a broad spectrum oil which contains no THC whatsoever.
There are several online and shops in Ireland where you can buy CBD oil. Wherever you choose, just make sure the CBD oil you choose has the following:
1) Full spectrum or whole-plant product which studies show work best. You might think pure CBD or isolated CBD would work better but this is not the case. Whole plant CBD works synergistically with all other compounds in the plant (like other minor cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids).
2) Make sure the CBD is certified organic. Hemp is a bioaccumulator which means it absorbs heavy metals from the soil. You always want to make sure no pesticides or heavy metals were used in growing the hemp.
3) Make sure it's a trustworthy CBD company. Look at Trustpilot reviews for company and any products they sell. Avoid any CBD company that makes medical claims on its products.
4) Look for Certificate of analysis on products. All CBD products should have certificates of analysis to show what is in the product to make sure what you are buying really is what it says it is.
5) Look for pure clean ingredients. Some CBD products have cheap filler ingredients which are not beneficial in any way for our bodies. A good rule is to look for the least amount of ingredients in your products.
Taking CBD Oil
You should start to feel a general light energy and a reduction in some of the symptoms you are looking to treat.
Everyone's Endocannabinoid system is different so it's difficult for us to recommend any dosage. One person might need to take 6 drops a day to feel any symptom relief while another person might need only 2. We encourage all our customers to follow the basic rules of start low, go slow, take your CBD consistently and to find their own sweet spot. You can learn more from our blogs on taking CBD
Everyone is different and everyone has their own individual timeline with this. People's results vary due to their own bodies and their own health. Consistency is the absolute key. We are big fans of microdosing here, small amounts taken regularly (e.g. 2/3 times throughout the day vs. one single large dose).
CBD will not make you tired. Instead, most CBD will relax you which in turn helps you sleep.
If you are taking any medication, we recommend you talk to your doctor before beginning to start with CBD.
CBD interacts with the P450 cytochrome liver enzyme. This is the same way that grapefruit interacts with medication. What you need to ask your doctor is, can you take grapefruit with your medication. Grapefruits interact with the metabolism of medication in the same way. So if the doctor says no to grapefruit, it's likely a no to using CBD.
CBD is very safe to take. Scientific studies have shown that even in extremely high doses (up to 2000mg), CBD does not have any serious side effects.
Most ppl take 10-50mg of CBD daily.
So it's unlikely you will see any side effects in these low doses but adverse side effects to look out for would be diarrhoea, nausea and fatigue.
